STD Screening in Rawang Selangor: What Tests Are Done and Is It Confidential?

Getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is one of the most responsible things a sexually active person can do, yet in Malaysia it remains something many people delay or avoid entirely due to embarrassment, fear, or simply not knowing where to go.

At Vivardi Clinics Rawang, we offer comprehensive, confidential STD screening in a private, non-judgmental environment. This guide explains what the testing process involves, which tests are included, and addresses the confidentiality question directly.

Why STD Screening Matters Even Without Symptoms

This is the most important point in this entire article: most STDs in Malaysia do not cause obvious symptoms, particularly in the early stages and often for extended periods.

• Chlamydia, the most common STD globally, produces no symptoms in approximately 70% of infected women and 50% of infected men
• HIV can be asymptomatic for years while still being transmissible
• HPV (Human Papillomavirus) often causes no visible symptoms while still being transmitted sexually and potentially contributing to cervical cancer
• Gonorrhoea can be asymptomatic in the throat and rectum
• Herpes simplex is frequently asymptomatic or produces symptoms so mild they are not recognised as herpes

Feeling fine is not reliable reassurance that you do not have an STD. Regular testing is the only way to know for certain.

Who Should Get Tested?

The honest answer is: anyone who is sexually active. Specifically, testing is strongly recommended for:

• People with multiple sexual partners or whose partner has multiple partners
• Anyone who has had unprotected sexual contact with a new or casual partner
• People who have experienced a condom failure
• Anyone who has been told by a partner that they have tested positive for an STD
• Anyone starting a new relationship who wants mutual clarity before stopping condom use
• People on PrEP (HIV prevention medication), who should test every three months
• Those experiencing symptoms that might indicate infection: unusual discharge, sores, pain during urination, pelvic pain, or unusual odour
• Anyone who has not been tested and wants to know their status for peace of mind

What STD Tests Are Available at Vivardi Clinics Rawang?

At Vivardi Clinics, we offer individual tests and screening packages. Our standard STD screening panel includes testing for the most clinically significant infections:

HIV

HIV testing using the Alere HIV rapid test gives results in 15 minutes. For the most comprehensive HIV detection, we can also arrange laboratory-based fourth-generation antibody/antigen testing where indicated. All HIV results are handled with strict confidentiality.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum. It progresses through stages and can cause serious complications if untreated, including neurological and cardiovascular damage in late stages. A rapid syphilis test is available with results in minutes. Positive results are confirmed with laboratory testing.

Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia

These are the two most common bacterial STDs. Both can be asymptomatic for extended periods. Untreated, they can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in women and epididymitis in men, both of which can affect fertility. Testing is done via urine sample or swab.

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C

Both are blood-borne viruses with sexual transmission routes. Hepatitis B vaccination is part of Malaysia’s national immunisation schedule, but hepatitis C has no vaccine and is increasingly screened for. Blood tests are used for both.

Herpes Simplex (HSV-1 and HSV-2)

Herpes testing can be done by blood (antibody test) or swab from an active sore. Blood testing detects whether you have been exposed to the virus even in the absence of active symptoms.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

HPV testing for women is typically done via a swab as part of cervical screening. There is currently no approved routine HPV blood test for detection purposes. Discussion of HPV vaccination is also part of our sexual health consultations.

Trichomonas

A common parasitic infection that can be asymptomatic or cause itching and unusual discharge. Detected via microscopy or swab.

How Does STD Screening Work at Vivardi Clinics?

The process is designed to be as comfortable and efficient as possible:

• Step 1: Brief consultation — Our doctor has a short private conversation about your recent sexual history, any symptoms, and which tests are appropriate for your situation
• Step 2: Sample collection — Depending on the tests needed, samples may include a blood draw, urine sample, and occasionally a swab from the throat, rectum, or genitals
• Step 3: Processing — Rapid tests are processed on-site and give results within 15 to 30 minutes. Some tests are sent to a laboratory and results are available within two to five working days
• Step 4: Results and advice — Your doctor discusses the results with you, explains what they mean, and advises on any treatment needed or follow-up required

Is STD Screening Confidential at Vivardi Clinics?

Yes. Completely.

Your sexual health consultation and test results are your private medical information. They are not disclosed to your employer, family members, or any third party without your specific consent.

Vivardi Clinics Rawang operates as a private medical clinic, meaning your information is not shared with national registries or connected to your workplace or insurance without your knowledge and agreement. Our doctor and clinic staff treat sexual health consultations with the same professional confidentiality as any other medical matter.

Regarding legal requirements: Malaysian law does require doctors to report certain communicable diseases to the Ministry of Health under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act. HIV is a notifiable disease under this Act. However, this is a public health reporting mechanism and is separate from the day-to-day disclosure of your personal information to other parties. Our doctor will explain the relevant requirements clearly if they apply to your situation.

What Happens If a Test Is Positive?

A positive result is not a catastrophe. All of the conditions we test for are treatable or manageable:

• Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are curable with appropriate antibiotics
• Syphilis is curable with penicillin in most stages
• HIV is not curable but is very effectively managed with antiretroviral therapy to the point where viral load becomes undetectable and the person can live a full and healthy life
• Herpes is a lifelong condition but manageable with antiviral medication to reduce frequency and severity of outbreaks
• Hepatitis B and C have effective treatments and chronic hepatitis C is now curable with modern direct-acting antiviral medications

Knowing your status is always better than not knowing. Treatment is available. Your doctor at Vivardi Clinics will guide you through every step.

What About Partner Notification?

If you test positive for an STD, you have a moral and in some cases a legal obligation to inform sexual partners who may have been exposed so they can get tested and treated. Your doctor will discuss this with you sensitively and explain what is required.

Partner notification does not mean your clinic will contact your partners. It is your personal responsibility and our doctor can provide guidance on how to approach these conversations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment for STD screening at Vivardi Clinics?

An appointment is recommended to minimise waiting time. Please call or WhatsApp us to arrange a time. Walk-ins are accommodated where capacity allows.

Will my STD test results appear on my medical records or insurance?

At Vivardi Clinics as a private clinic, your results are part of your clinic records which are kept confidential. If you are paying privately (not through insurance), your results do not automatically appear in insurance records. If you intend to claim through insurance for related treatment, discuss this with our team. We would advise on what is included in any claim submission.

How often should I get an STD screen?

For sexually active people with multiple partners, annual testing is a minimum recommendation. People on PrEP should test every three months. For people in long-term monogamous relationships, testing when the relationship starts and mutual fidelity is established is typically sufficient, unless circumstances change.

Can I test for STDs if I have no symptoms?

Yes, and this is exactly when testing is most important. Most STDs are asymptomatic in early stages and can only be reliably detected through testing.
