Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection globally, with the WHO estimating that most sexually active adults will contract at least one HPV strain in their lifetime. Genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11 are highly treatable, with 2025 treatment guidelines from the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) recommending cryotherapy, electrocautery, or topical imiquimod depending on lesion size, number, and location. Clearance rates per treatment course range from 70–95%, depending on modality: electrocautery achieves the highest single-session clearance (85–95%) for external lesions. A 2024 Malaysian study found that 60% of untreated wart patients had spontaneous regression within 2 years, but treatment is recommended to reduce transmission risk and symptom burden.
