One of the most frustrating things about pigmentation is when dark spots return after you thought they were gone. This cycle is common, and understanding why it happens is the key to breaking it. At Vivardi Clinics in Rawang, Selangor, our doctors help patients not only treat pigmentation but keep it from coming back.
Why pigmentation keeps returning
Pigmentation is caused by excess melanin in the skin, and the triggers that caused it in the first place are often still present after treatment. The biggest culprit is sun exposure. Even after a treatment clears dark spots, ongoing sun exposure can stimulate the skin to produce pigment again. Hormones and inflammation can also keep the cycle going.
The role of melasma
Some pigmentation, particularly melasma, is especially prone to returning. Melasma is influenced by hormones and heat as well as sun, which makes it more stubborn. It can be managed well, but it usually needs ongoing care and protection rather than a one-time fix. Knowing whether you have melasma or simpler sunspots changes the approach.
How to break the cycle
Treat correctly
The right treatment for your pigmentation type matters. Treatments such as our Pico laser target pigment effectively when matched to the cause.
Protect every day
Daily sun protection is the single most important step to stop pigmentation returning, especially in our climate.
Maintain and review
Ongoing care and occasional maintenance help keep results, particularly for melasma.
Why professional guidance helps
Treating pigmentation without addressing the cause often leads to disappointment. A doctor-led plan combines the right treatment with prevention, which is what actually breaks the cycle. For more on tackling pigmentation with lasers, see our article on combating pigmentation with laser technology.
What to expect at Vivardi
